After 6 Months of Red Light Therapy – Is It Actually Worth It?

I will be straightforward with you: I have tried a lot of skincare gadgets over the years. Most of them end up collecting dust in my bathroom cabinet. But red light therapy? That is different.

I have been using a red light therapy device consistently for over six months now, and I feel like I can finally give you an honest assessment of whether it is worth the investment.

Why I Started

My skin was showing signs of aging – nothing dramatic, but I noticed my complexion was not as vibrant as it used to be. I wanted something I could use at home without breaking the bank on spa visits.

A friend recommended red light therapy, specifically mentioning how it helped with collagen production. I am not a scientist, but the idea of using light to stimulate my skin’s natural processes made sense to me.

The First Month: Getting Used to It

Let us be real – the first few weeks were kind of boring. You sit there with this red light shining on your face, and aside from a slight warming sensation, you do not really feel anything happening.

I almost gave up. But I am stubborn, and I had spent the money, so I kept going.

Looking back, that was probably the most important decision I made – sticking with it past the initial adjustment period.

Month 2-3: Starting to Notice Changes

Here is when things got interesting. My skin started looking more… alive? That is the best way I can describe it. There was a certain radiance that had not been there before.

My wife, who is my harshest critic, even commented that my skin looked good. High praise from her!

The fine lines around my eyes had not disappeared, but they seemed softer. Not dramatically different, but enough that I noticed when I looked in the mirror.

Month 4-6: The Real Results Show

By the fourth month, I was really impressed. My skin texture had improved significantly – it felt smoother and looked more even. The dullness that had started to appear was noticeably reduced.

What surprised me most was how my skin felt overall. It seemed more resilient, if that makes sense. Less reactive to changes in weather or new products I tried.

I also found that my skincare products seemed to work better. I do not know if it is coincidence or if the light helped my skin absorb them better, but my moisturizer definitely felt more effective.

Things I Wish I Knew Earlier

Based on my experience, here is what I would tell someone just starting out:

  • Start slow. I began with 5-minute sessions and worked up to 10-15 minutes. Your skin needs time to adjust.
  • Distance matters. I have found that keeping the device at the recommended distance works best. Too close can cause warmth, too far reduces effectiveness.
  • Protect your eyes. I know it is tempting to just open your eyes during treatment, but the light is intense. I use the protective goggles that came with my device.
  • Be patient. I know I sound like a broken record, but the results really do take time. If you only use it for two weeks and expect miracles, you will be disappointed.

What Does Not Work

Let me save you some time: inconsistent use does not work. I have taken breaks before (when traveling or busy periods), and I definitely noticed a difference when I got back to my routine.

Also, cheaper devices tend to have weaker light output. I tried a budget option briefly before investing in a better one, and the results were not comparable.

The Bottom Line

Is red light therapy worth it? Based on my six-month experience, yes – with some caveats.

It is not a magic solution, but it is an effective tool for improving skin health over time. The key is consistency and having realistic expectations.

If you are interested, I would suggest looking into quality devices from the Plasma Pen category. There are options at various price points, but I would recommend investing in something reliable.

Six months later, I am still using my device regularly, and my skin continues to show improvement. That is probably the best endorsement I can give.
