Is Red Light Therapy Safe for Eyes and Skin What I Learned
I get asked about safety more than anything else. Is it safe for your eyes? Does it cause cancer? Can you use it while pregnant? I researched every concern before buying my first device and here is what I found from actual science not internet rumors.
Is Red Light Safe for Your Eyes
Red light at 630 to 660 nanometers is not classified as hazardous to your eyes the way ultraviolet light is. The main concern is brightness. The light is intense and staring directly at the LEDs can cause temporary afterimages and eye strain. Wearing the included eye protection eliminates this risk completely.
Near infrared at 850nm is invisible but penetrates deeper. Some research suggests long term exposure without protection could theoretically affect the lens over many years. I wear my Skifir goggles every session. They are comfortable and block all wavelengths. No reason to skip them.
Does Red Light Cause Cancer or Skin Damage
Red light therapy uses non ionizing radiation which does not damage DNA the way UV or X rays do. There is no evidence linking red light therapy to skin cancer. In fact red light is sometimes used in cancer treatment clinics to manage chemotherapy side effects like mouth sores.
The wavelengths used in red light therapy are the opposite of damaging. They stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation. UV light damages skin cells. Red light energizes them. The two are completely different parts of the light spectrum with opposite effects on your biology.
Can You Use Red Light While Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Red light therapy is generally considered safe during pregnancy as a topical treatment. The light does not penetrate deep enough to reach the uterus or affect the developing baby. Many pregnant women use red light for skin changes during pregnancy and for postpartum recovery.
That said I always recommend checking with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment during pregnancy. My Skifir mask was fine to use during my pregnancy but every situation is different. When in doubt ask your doctor.
The eye safety concern comes up in every conversation about red light therapy. Red light at therapeutic wavelengths 630nm to 850nm does not contain UV radiation. It is the UV spectrum that causes eye damage. Red light is closer to what your eyes see during sunset naturally occurring and safe in controlled exposure. That said I always use the closed eye goggles that came with my Skifir mask. Some people claim you can keep your eyes open because the light is visible and safe but I do not take that risk. Safety guidelines recommend eye protection for a reason.
