My Experience Using Red Light Therapy After Microneedling
I get microneedling done three times a year. It helps with my acne scars but the recovery is rough. My face looks like a sunburn for two days and I cannot wear makeup. After my last session I tried using my Skifir mask to speed up the healing. The difference was dramatic enough that I now schedule my microneedling around my red light routine.
Why Red Light and Microneedling Work Together
Microneedling creates controlled micro injuries in your skin to trigger collagen production. Red light therapy boosts your cells energy production which accelerates the healing of those micro injuries. The combination produces more collagen than either treatment alone because the red light amplifies your skin natural repair response.
The 630nm wavelength is ideal for post procedure healing because it is slightly more surface level than 660nm. It targets the inflammation and speeds up wound closure. I use this setting on my Skifir mask for the first three days after microneedling before switching to the standard 660nm setting.
My Post Microneedling Recovery Timeline
Without red light my recovery took about four to five days. Redness was visible for two full days and my skin felt tight and sensitive for another two. With red light therapy the redness faded within twenty four hours. My skin felt normal by day three. I could wear makeup the day after the procedure.
I use my Skifir mask for ten minutes immediately after the microneedling session. Then again the next morning and evening. After three days I drop to once daily until my skin feels completely normal. The accelerated recovery has made microneedling much more practical for my schedule.
Wait until the numbing cream has worn off and your skin is clean before using red light. Do not apply any products before your session. Use the lowest comfortable intensity setting for the first few sessions after the procedure. Avoid near infrared light for the first three days as the deeper penetration can irritate freshly treated skin.
Keep your sessions shorter than usual. Five to seven minutes is enough for the first few days. Listen to your skin. If it feels warm or uncomfortable reduce the session length. My Skifir mask on the 630nm red only setting has been the perfect post procedure tool for my skin.
The window after microneedling is when your skin is most receptive to stimulation. The micro channels created by the needles allow red light to penetrate deeper than usual. But you have to be careful about timing. Using red light immediately after needles can cause irritation because the skin is already inflamed. I found that waiting four to six hours after the procedure gives the best results without overstressing the skin. I combined microneedling at home with my Skifir mask every two weeks for three months. Recovery time shortened significantly. By the third session my skin was fully healed within 24 hours.
